This app needs a Dark Mode
  • Needs Pinch Expand To Enlarge Articles

I wish I could download the entire paper before getting on a plane or subway. I wish I could pinch to expand the size of the article to make it easier to see. Not too much to ask for the price of the online subscription... and the only paper of the four I read on my iPad every day that doesn’t give me those must-haves.

This latest version of the app consistently freezes and becomes unresponsive. Also If I pay for a subscription typically I expect to not see ads. In general I have a better experience reading articles on Safari (doesn’t freeze, apple’s reader blocks the ads).
  • App frequently freezes loading ads

While reading in locations with intermittent connectivity, like the subway, the app will freeze and require a restart. It seems to be related to ads being loaded into the content. This issue has been going on for as long as I have been using the app across multiple different phones. Please fix the constant freezing!
  • Don't update on older iPads

I love and support the NY Times. This was one of my most-used apps. Then I did the update and it crashes every time I try to open it. I installed and re-installed, hard-reset, etc. Why let me update at all if you didn't test or support older OS version?!
  • Why make us pay!!

I go to other news apps and they let you read as many articles as you want. The Times is the only major news app that is always asking you to pay after reading only a few articles. Why? Otherwise my review would have been a good one.
  • Auto play ads on silent mode

I have been a long-time subscriber to NYT and I love their content. However, I am considering cancelling my subscription because of the auto-play ads on this app. When my phone is on silent, the ads are still able to play through my phone speakers. I can’t listen to music while reading either because the ads pause my music whenever they appear in articles, and they appear very frequently. I understand that ads are a requirement, but do they have to be so obtrusive? This is unacceptable for a subscription service like this.
  • Stories do not load

I love reading NYT—when this app lets me. Whenever I click on a push notification for a headline, it takes AGES to load and sometimes it never loads. Most of the time I end up just quitting. I want this app for quick breaking news updates, but it’s not accomplishing that at all.
  • Worst app for offline reading - FT (A+) or WSJ (A-) much much better

It’s a nightmare to download, plus you never know if it has finished downloading so you are always guessing. This is literally the first App review I have ever written which should tell you all. It is embarrassing for The NY Times to have such an awful App for offline reading. Please check for yourself and fix it!

Thanks for adding the today’s paper page to the app! That view is what it took to get me to finally use the app full-time, rather than using that today’s paper view of the mobile website. I like the fact that I can scroll through that page and know that I’ve not missed anything.
