  • Translation

The app is good, but there's a lot of words that the pronunciation is very hard to understand 'cause the sound is very robotic.
  • Way Too Expensive for Sub-Par Quality

    By Jim.!?
Very expensive for what you get. I’m already spending $15/month on this plan, and there are only a small handful of videos available in Japanese and I can’t even access all my flashcards unless I shell out another $5/month. Kind of a ripoff. Also, the UI isn’t great, I often have to start my entire video over from the begin when scrolling back to the videos from the “add to flashcard” deck screen. I wasn’t going to write a review, but since they kept asking me to write one from the main screen every time I logged in, here it is.

I recently purchased the Mandarin course from FluentU and was using it on the internet until I switched to the app. What a huge difference, and suddenly everything was a piece of cake. The way the app is designed is so you can not only work on the video at hand but instant Mandarin dictionaries pop up at the tap of a finger on a word you want to learn, AND related sentences then pop up that let you expand on the word you are tapping to learn. You can intuitively get back to the video any time. With their app, everything is intuitive and just where you need it. To the team at FluentU, thanks for putting in the extra effort. UPDATE: this app has no flaws, and it is VERY SOPHISTICATED, even going so far as to correct you if you make a mistake by pointing out “you typed _ _ _ “ if you type the wrong answer. I do have one request, and I’m hoping that the developers can address this. When you click on a word a dictionary pops up immediately, and below that SEVERAL sentences containing the same word that you are trying to look up. The problem is that none of the words in the new sample sentences can be clicked on to find out their meanings. As a result it’s great to see the meaning of the word you are trying to find out in the pop up dictionary, but none of the words in the new sample sentences below can be looked up in the dictionary. You can’t click on them. Otherwise I still give this app 5 stars all the way. Personally I wish I could give it 10 stars, it’s that good ADDITIONAL UPDATE: this app can read my mind!! I made a very small mistake on one of the tone marks because I was typing in a hurry and even though the app let me pass on that part of the quiz, the app still reminded me to “pay attention to the ā because I typed á instead!! I’m so addicted that I have been studying between 5 and 7 hours on FluentU daily now!!! The results are amazing!!! Besides all of this, the videos are so addictive, it makes learning all the more easier. You’re able to get right in the middle of the conversation between two or more people in the video and learn so much. For so many years while I was studying Mandarin I was wishing that there was a way to listen up close to people talking on the street and this is it!! FluentU makes that wish a reality with their videos
  • Great idea, needs work

I want to use it but the robotic text to voice is too jarring, making the listening comprehension exercises too frustrating. Other rough edges make make this app fall short of its potential and much shorter in value compared to the price for subscription.
  • App doesn't work well

Updated review - despite my problems with viewing videos on the app, I purchased a subscription anyway since I am finding the desktop version helpful in my French. However I continue to be frustrated with the app. The user experience is not that great and I find the audio lessons totally useless because the audio is not synced with the text. In other words, the voice will go onto the next sentence, but the text lags behind. This is a completely unforgivable problem and totally ruins the user experience on audio lessons. I think for the amount they charge for a subscription, the app really needs to be better. It seems kind of outdated (still rocking the ancient iOS keyboard in places!) The other big problem with FluentU is that the audio levels between videos vary wildly. Sometimes the audio is so quiet that you have to turn the volume right up, then when the video's finished and FluentU's audio kicks in (like the happy noise when you complete an exercise) almost blows your ears off. If FluentU acts as a wrapper around these YouTube videos then they really need to think about incorporating some kind of volume normalization to give a consistent audio experience from video to video.
  • Good idea, but buggy and doesn’t work

    By kaste25
On my iPad, this would run YouTube videos but never loaded any dialogue scripts or vocabulary. Support took three days to respond to my bug report, and then told me to report it to a different branch. Clunky and below expectations for a pricy paid subscription. Hope they work it out, but I’m canceling and deleting.
  • Just, so much money

    By blisterrednano
I understand you need to make money as a developer. I don't hate in app purchases. I usually try to support the makers of the app if I like it. But Jesus, $250.00+?????? That's simply too much. It's a shame as I was very excited for the app. :(
  • Great so far!

Just with started with Spanish yesterday and I’m already learning faster then before!
  • great language exploration app

    By blue bonnet 78
FluentU is a fantastic resource for learning how languages are actually spoken. You can click on words for definitions, grammar tips, additional examples, which is really useful especially in comparison to apps like duolingo. The quizzes and review sections are well implemented also. Totally worth the monthly fee.
  • Too bad impossible to use offline

    By Del#82
I am using the Chinese app, it is pretty good, but the videos are not downloadable, even for a short time. So whenever the connection is bad, like in the bus, subway, plane, countryside etc.. It’s not possible to practice. I travel a lot, and this is very inconvenient for me.
