  • Instructors don’t seem healthy

I was struck by how unhealthy a few of the instructors seemed. There are courses on mindful eating, yet a few of the featured “instructors” clearly have problems in this area. I have a friend who likes to give me health advice while being a smoker, and I thought of her immediately when I listened/watched one of the instructors.

The best mindfulness app. Amazing teachers and funny, thoughtful, well-designed courses. A gem.

I stumbled upon the free version and thought “maybe I should try something like this”. I found myself really appreciating the one minute meditations. And then I started exploring the app and each time I do I find a new instructor or new category that I seem to like even more. I signed up for a monthly subscription “thinking oh I I’ll get bored with it after a few weeks.” I stopped the subscription because I was trying to save money but quickly found I missed it. I have now purchased the yearly subscription. I view it as a small investment in myself. I really have come to rely on these guided meditations. Before I reach for crap and junk food, I can turn to the mindful eating meditations and check in with myself. At night I really appreciate a little bit of the downtown offered through meditation before going to bed. And just this morning I discovered a gratitude meditation that’s a perfect way to start my day. Thanks for creating this.

I’m enjoying the beginner series and it is just the right length. I have been choosing to meditate just before bed and find I am sleeping better after just 6 sessions.

I love that there are so many sessions to choose from and there are lessons from experts. Instead of checking social media, I now do a sleep meditation every night. I’ve learned so much!

Great app. But the cost to continue is way too much.

I don’t understand how a cancelled subscription before the trial still ends up charging you.

As an atheist I love Dan Harris’ skeptical approach. I have tried several other apps in the last 9 years but this one works for me best. Joseph Goldstein and Anushka Fernandopulle are my favorites but I enjoy several other teachers as well. The discussions preceding many meditations (within courses) are excellent educational materials for me. The topics covered range from stress and fear to lust to Buddhism basics that everyone can apply regardless of their world view. I see it as a modern church in an app (minus god and social interactions) - I would not be surprised if this grew into a movement with physical locations across the US where likeminded users would meet, listen to presentations, share ideas and meditate together. I think a need for such a movement (The Church of Reason and Meditation) exists. I read the book 10% Happier before I stumbled on the app (I’m on my second yearly subscription) so I felt like I knew Dan Harris and I can count on him eliminating references to supernatural godly powers that always trigger resistance in me, and make me want to get up and walk away irritated. The app may seem pricey but you get what you pay for and more. It is definitely worth more for me than my gym membership.

For 45+ years, I’ve tried to meditate. It felt like sitting in fire. That is, until now. The 10% Happier app has opened up an entire world beyond that which I could have imagined. I’ve tried other apps, and my experience has been lukewarm. I am having so much joy exploring the present, being curious and opening my heart. Thanks you!
