Boot Up

I always know it's August when I bid on a pair of eBay boots. Every year, I get one fun pair of eBay boots, and I buy another pair some place else.... It's the beginning of the Autumn obsession, and that can begin, because I tell you, in San Francisco, you can wear boots all year round and no one will look at you strange. Heck, you can wear fake plastic boobs an call yourself Steve, and no one will look at you strange.... The thing is, this year, I really want to get a nice pair of boots. Last year I bought a pair of NineWest ones that get compliments from strangers every time I wear them, but the leather is cracking.

Above are Finsk Boots, made by Julia Lunsten. She is known for experimenting with birch wood native to Finland, constructing rather architectural heels, and sculptural boots. I love these, and they run for about £255. If I say it in pounds, it won't hurt so much when I buy them.

  • Reader Susan emailed me to ask how to choose the right boots to go with your dresses, and I had to admit to her that I am (as the Brits say) pants at choosing boots. I have boots, certainly, but I don't have any boots that I consider successful, where "successful" means that I wear them constantly (and am always looking for more excuses to wear them).

  • I own a pair of 2 year old Seychelles boots. They're absolutely brilliant in the sense of comfort, practicality and style. I'm so attached that I refuse to believe that the sole is slowly wearing away, that there is hardly any grip left, or that the zipper is removing itself from the actual boot.

  • It's been raining quite often in London in the past two weeks and I just realised that I have no shoes to wear for those rainy days. The only normal shoes that completely cover up my feet I own are my Puma sneakers, which are all white.

  • I know that the main focus of a lookbook of a fashion collection is the clothes, but upon looking at Paul & Joe's latest lookbook, I could not help but stare in fixated horror at the model's feet.

  • I've been loving buckled boots ever since seeing Jessica Alba's way back when. I got a pair that were similar in style, but still not quite what I was looking for.

  • As you may have noticed Barneys Girl and I haven't blogged a lot about fashion trends recently. Mostly, it's because we haven't been particularly inspired. Doesn't it seem like you can wear last FW's clothes and still seem fashionable this season?

  • Yesterday my friend and I went into the city on a hunt for new boots for my friend. She is vegetarian and therefore (quite rightly) will not wear leather. You would think that it would be relatively easy to find boots made of a synthetic material given the abundance of cheap shops that are in existence but it proved harder than I had expected.

  • I think I have found the key to staying warm in the office (yes, I know it’s July but I am cold all the time, all year round. And also: it's raining). Yesterday I wore boots and was toasty warm, despite being in a ¾ sleeve cardi. Today I have bare feet in my shoes and even thought my top is made of (fine) wool, I have been cold all morning.
