I have not heard of the term drunkorexia until today as well as other eating disorder buzzwords such as orthorexia or diabulemia. Drunkorexia is an eating disorder that combines starving the body (anorexia) for the majority of the day in order to bank calories for the binge drinking that will take place later. It is a growing trend among college students (particularly women.) Banking calories is never a good idea but to do it in order to make up for the calories in alcohol is even more dangerous.
The eating disorder is perpetuated further by celebrities who are pencil thin and constantly in and out of rehab. Not to mention the pressures of fitting in with the college crowd that binge drink because it’s cool. However, this disorder isn’t only affecting college-aged individuals. Some adults with the disorder use alcohol as a way to relieve their anxiety or as a way to purge as drinking on an empty stomach usually leads to vomiting.
