Fashion Week Watch: Marchesa S/S 2009 RTW

Georgina Chapman is to women what the Fairy Godmother was to Cinderella — her dresses are nothing short of divine. Doesn't the one on the bottom left remind you of the gown Audrey Hepburn wore in Sabrina?

  • Hervé Léger by Max Azria for next spring brought out a few signature bandage dresses, but the silhouettes and details were reinvented. Here are the top looks:

  • Oscar de la Renta is synonymous with tailored elegance and, true to form, the Spring collection was chic, though not surprising. Then again, if it's not broke, why fix it?

    These were my favorites:

  • The seemingly effortless chic of the Parisian women is embodied in Catherine Malandrino's clothes. This year marks the 10-year anniversary of her label Malandrino's collections always feature flawless tailoring, sumptuous materials and exquisite details.

  • I've long been a fan of Tracy Reese — her clothes are elegant while still wearable, her fabrics and colors luscious. The Spring 2009 Ready-to-Wear collection has a plethora of gorgeous individual pieces, but the collection is disjointed colorwise and stylewise — it's as if there were 3 different collections going on, which didn't tell a cohesive story.

  • Diane Von Furstenberg's Spring 2009 collection didn't really speak to my personal aesthetic with it's ethereal Flower Child dresses and, frankly, with many of the outfits, the feathered headdresses distracted me from the garments. That said, the collection was airy, joyous, and young, with several lovely surprises. Here are my top picks:

  • The Marc Jacobs show was energetic and eclectic; picture a fashion whirlwind, and you've got the idea. It's My Fair Lady meets space geishas. You have to see the whole show.

  • As you know, I'm a Galliano fangirl. Just look at these gorgeous creations, inspired by... femme fatales in Hitchcock movies!

  • I love the whole aesthetic of Cavalli's Fall 2008 ad campaign. More than mere ads, each is a work of art. The ads feel like dream visions or fairy tales in a Brothers Grimm sense — or as if Edgar Allan Poe's heroines were dancing in Daliesque landscapes. Sublime!

  • The experience of Anna Sui's collection is like being inside a kaleidoscope bursting with color, pattern, and detail. Yet somehow, most of the time, the profusion of imagery does not overwhelm. Recounting as her inspiration Paris in the "Gay 90s", 1890s, that is, Anna Sui has created a unique collection that celebrates life, youth, and fashion.

  • Sleek, understated sophistication is what we associate with Ralph Lauren. His Fall 2009 collection featured ready-for-the-country-club Lauren looks, although the materials were more luxurious across the board. Silk satins, velvets, and furs in the tenderest colors gave the collection a dreamy, old world feel. It was, simply stated, lovely.

  • Tam's collection for the Fall was inspired by the Chinese character for nothingness: both the physical beauty of the character itself and the symbolical beauty — one of the tenets of Buddhism is that the material world is an illusion and that everything, being nothing, is one.

  • The Temperley London Fall collection is a mix of influences from Victoriana to the Far East, with a bit of cavalry and motorcycle chick thrown in. One would think those things would not mesh, but Alice Temperley has married them all together into an irreverent, fun collection.

  • I miss Gianni. Donatella's Fall/Winter 2009 collection for Versace was 55 outfits of "meh, seen it."

    The alright ones:
