The Lonely Sea And The Sky

I think I'd like to live on the water...like in a houseboat, but only for about a year. It wouldn't be on the ocean (or Puget Sound, as pictured below). Instead, I would live on a river. Then, if I ever had to escape the long arm of the law, I would pull up my anchor and let the current pull me away...“I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky; and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by.” -John MasefieldOutfit details:scarf- gift from my fatherjacket- H&Mnecklace- Modclothdress- White House Black Markettights- street vendorshoes- Bloch via Gilt

  • In honor of the new year and memory of the old, I thought I'd do one picture/outfit from every month this year...this proved to be far easier in conception than reality. When you have such a keen record of the days it is hard to pick favorites.
  • Lately I've been deviating from my usual path. I'm taking new paths through the woods and pushing just a little bit further to see what is around the bend. Sometimes there is a wide open field, or moss-covered woods and occasionally a more unusual surprise: a mock village for military drills or an abandoned, roofless building...

  • The best kind of outfits seem to be happy accidents. They pull together pieces from different shops, were bought years apart, and yet seem meant to be worn all together. It can take me forever to dress, because I just start pulling things instinctively. It is rare for me to have an exact picture in mind, which often leads to a pile of discarded extras and accessories on the floor.
  • A short while ago on Chictopia, I won a gift card to Forever 21. This immediately led to trolling the F21 website and exhaustive mental debate over what to order. As soon as I saw this dress, one item was decided.
  • If you were coming in the fall,
    I'd brush the summer by
With half a smile and half a spurn,
    As housewives do a fly.

If I could see you in a year,
I'd wind the months in balls,
And put them each in separate drawers,
    Until their time befalls.

  • I enjoy taking my pictures in this stretch of wilderness near my home. Yes, there are roads (many unpaved) and much of it is used for military drilling, but I still consider it a sprawl of wilderness. Despite cannons and artillery fire, a good part is just pure rambling nature and is teeming with wildlife. There are rivers with salmon and one can commonly spot deer traipsing about.
  • "The Road goes ever on and on down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, and I must follow, if I can, pursuing it with eager feet, until it joins some larger way where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say." --J. R. R.
  • Once upon a time, the Spring 2008 collections came out and Rodarte sent tulle dresses floating down the runway. A little while before that there was an epic film starring Faye Dunaway that swept all who watched into a golden world of crime and passion. While the style of the latter could be imitated, clothes of the former were sadly out of reach...and then came Target.
  • I was looking through some of the film I shot while in Japan. Big mistake. Now I keep thinking about going back, in the spring, for the cherry blossoms. It is quite unrealistic. But the vision persists. The photographs did remind me of how atmospheric I used to be with my shots. I framed all the pictures of friends (and strangers) with whatever elements were about: branches, windows, etc.

Once again it is still and reflective; a soothing place to pass a bit of time.It has been too long since I wore my star print dress, no? I wore it so much last year that I can only be inspired to wear it when I can think of a fresh way to style it.

  • Can you feel the fall in these pictures? We have the weather for layers and knits here in 'ole Washington; and in my particular case: layered knits. I have been wearing a surprisingly wealth of neutrals this year...which if you've been following my blog for ages, is unusual for me. I did top this off with mustard yellow in an attempt to keep it from being too blah and predictable.
