Making the Most Out of Drinking Protein Shakes

If you drink protein shakes, hopefully you already know why protein is so important for our health. If not, you can read about why we need protein in an earlier article. Many people who decide to start burning fat and building muscle will add protein shakes to their diets. There are a couple things to know about protein shakes to get the most benefit out of drinking them.

Which Protein is the Best?

I can’t say for sure which is the best but I know which is the most popular. Whey protein certainly dominates the protein powder market. There is a reason for this though. Whey protein is a complete protein and contains all of the essential and nonessential amino acids. It also absorbs fairly quickly after you drink it.

When Should You Drink Protein Shakes?

The two popular choices are to drink one right after a workout and one right before bed. Drinking right after a workout helps the muscles to repair themselves and grow. Since protein shakes absorb much more quickly than getting protein through food, it’s a more ideal protein source since muscles begin recovering right after a workout. Drinking a shake before bed provides the protein you need as your body begins to deplete protein during the night.

Other popular choices include drinking them as snacks or for breakfast. Many people will eat breakfast, have a shake, eat lunch, have a shake, then eat dinner. While some prefer to start their day off with a protein shake.

Can You Get Too Much Protein?

Too much of anything is not a good idea, but in general, you probably won’t overdo it with protein intake on a daily basis.

Not really. The only danger is if you have liver or kidney disease. That’s because these organs are your body’s “workhorses†that metabolize protein. So, if you have kidney or liver disease, such as cirrhosis or fatty liver, talk to your doctor. [Source: MSNBC]
