The Papworth Breathing Method

Exercise can be a common trigger for individuals with asthma. Exercise-induced asthma attacks are commonly caused due to the cooler air breathed in through the mouth contrasting with the warmer air in the lungs. Fortunately with proper treatment from your health care provider, anyone that deals with exercise-induced asthma can still enjoy and reap the benefits from regular exercise.

I came across a news article outlining an old breathing technique called the Papworth method. This breathing method was created 40 years ago to help reduce asthma symptoms. The Papworth method is a combination of breathing and relaxation exercises. Most recently a trial was conducted involving 85 asthma patients:

In their study, Holloway and West found that patients taught the Papworth method experienced significantly greater improvement in respiratory symptoms than did controls. Moreover, use of the Papworth method was associated with reductions in anxiety and depression as well as dysfunctional breathing. [Source: Reuters UK]
