Why I wish I was still in the Midwest (for now . . .)

Dresses: thrifted bow smock dress, '70s mini dress from littlegoldpoppy

I have to apologize for yet another post going on an on about how excited I am for Fall, but lately it's been hard to put together summer outfits, and I know I'm not the only blogger feeling that way. I've been stockpiling dresses to wear for Fall, buying long-sleeved ones that I won't be able to wear for a while, but it makes more sense than adding to my collection of sun dresses.

These two are my latest additions. And they might not look like Fall dresses, but I'm planning on wearing them with little cropped jackets and cardigans and thick tights and little oxford pumps. I've already put outfits together with them, which shows you how nerdy I am.

Does anyone else find themselves going for different dress lengths all-together when the seasons change? Over the summer when it was way too hot for the tights I'm most comfortable wearing I favored knee-length skirts and dresses. Anything too short would look silly on me--I'm too self-conscious to wear shorts on even the hottest of days. But when it's cool enough outside to get away with wearing tights I start going for shorter, swingy dresses. Plus I think they look best with a black opaque pair of tights anyway.

I found the dress on the left yesterday at a thrift store, along with a pile of dresses that I'm so tempted to keep as well. I'm trying not to! It's a little Japanese children's dress from the '80s, but it has a shape that looks modern to me--If I were in Illinois still, where according to my mom the temperatures are in the 50s (!), I'd be wearing this out with my little cropped navy jacket, tights, and ankle boots.

And that dress on the right might be one of my favorite things in my closet at the moment. It came in the mail seriously a few hours ago, but I'm already trying to come up with ways to wear it while it's still hot outside. On Sunday night I'm going to a concert and I think I might try to get away with it then.384556265

  • One positive thing about spending the holidays back in Hong Kong is the temperature -it's cool enough to wear a cute jacket but warm enough to wear skirts and dresses without freezing ones legs. In the past, tights used to mean that it was so cold I had to wear them with my school skirt.

  • Do cropped jeans look good with knee highs?
By knee highs I assume you mean boots, so my answer is yes! I am a great believer in showing off fabulous boots and what better way than wearing them under crop jeans. It’s a cleaner look than tucking your jeans in which can lead to bunching around the knees.

  • Tonight is New Year's Eve . . .  I'm not feeling the best yet, but I've got my New Year's dress on (photos to come!), and I'm going to try to get in my best holiday spirits for our little party.  Supposedly it involves the southern tradition of rooftop fireworks!  Until then I'm resting up and am nerdy enough to be blogging at 9:30 on New Year's Eve night.  Oh well.

  • Wicked booties and tie-dye tights make this collection by Emma Cook simply stunning. The muted tones allow the details and patterns shine through. The collection is not really my typical style, but isn't that rather the point? I'm often inspired by collections and people who dress very differently from myself.

  • Oh, I suppose this really doesn't have all that much to do with making do and mending as much as it has to do with taking that '30s/'40s thrifty spirit and applying it towards clothing purchases.
